River Campus Shows

 Greater Tuna

Greater Tuna is the hilarious comedy about Texas’ third smallest town, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, children and animals.

The show began as a simple party skit based on a political cartoon more than 25 years ago in Austin, Texas. Talented creators Joe Sears, Jaston Williams and Ed Howard were the imaginative authors that parlayed the sketch into a critically acclaimed production which has entertained audiences across the country ever since.

25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

4th Friday Art Walk

The 4th Friday Art Walk is a monthly, open studio and gallery walk between 6 and 9 pm, through a compact three-by-three block area of Ste. Genevieve's downtown quaint National Historic District. The event, which started in 2008 and boasts over a dozen art spaces, takes place the fourth Friday of every month from February to October. Other downtown shops, boutiques and restaurants also are open for Art Walk visitors to enjoy.

As usual, there is no charge to see all of the art in all the places where the Art Walk pennants will be flying. And, as usual, you can win a piece of art valued at $100 or more by purchasing a tryptich for $5.00 at the Welcome Center. Just get it stamped at six galleries and turn it in at any participating gallery for the drawing. If you win, you get to pick from an representative piece of art in each of the various galleries.

Please visit for more information regarding the Welcome Center, and for more about the 4th Friday Art Walk and other upcoming Art events, as well as the Sainte Genevieve Art Guild itself!

"We are looking forward to having our Great American Fourth of July in Arena Park this year," said Julia Thompson, director of the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department. "We love downtown but with the unpredictability of the river we decided Arena Park would be best -- the fireworks are very close.”

The Spirit of America Award is always a special time to recognize Cape Girardeau's outstanding citizens. Before the fireworks display, the Southeast Missourian will recognize its recipient of the Spirit of America Award. This is the 15th year of this annual award that celebrates an individual who goes above and beyond to help others, give back to the community and uphold the American spirit. The deadline for Spirit of America Award nominations is June 13. Organizations and individuals in Cape Girardeau, Perry, Bollinger, Stoddard and Scott counties in Missouri and Union, Pulaski and Alexander counties in Illinois are invited to submit nominations. Mail your entry to the Southeast Missourian, Spirit of America Award, PO Box 699, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701, or fill out the online nomination form at

Handicapped parking will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis in Arena Park and vehicles must have appropriate tags and licenses.

The program will be broadcast live on 960 KZIM and 1400 KSIM and at 9 p.m., all River Radio stations will play patriotic music as the fireworks commence.

No personal fireworks will be allowed onsite at the event.

In case of inclement weather, the fireworks will move to Wednesday, July 5, and the Spirit of America program will remain on July 4 and move inside the A.C. Brase Arena Building.

The Great American Fourth of July is proudly presented by the City of Cape Girardeau, the Southeast Missourian, Isle Casino Cape Girardeau and River Radio with contributions from Shivelbine's Music and rustmedia.
