Couple Runs Animal Rehab

NEWS

Sedgewickville, MO is a tiny village of about one hundred, but hidden in this quiet country town is a little animal paradise where all types of species are being cared for by John and Carolyn Watkins of Watkins’ Wildlife Rehab facility, an animal rehabilitation site. Beyond the normal range of donkeys, chickens, and geese, are some more animals unfamiliar to the Missouri countryside. Peacocks, African guineas, and a parakeet called Naked George, are just some of the creatures John and Carolyn take care of. Federally and state licensed, the Watkins’ facility cares for injured animals with the help of Biology professors, St. Louis Zoo workers, and veterinarians. The business is entirely non-profit, so John and Carolyn rely on volunteers and grandchildren to help care for their patients. In the past they have taken in a black bear cub, and a pelican who later went to live at the St. Louis Zoo. Both love animals, and they officially started the rehabilitation center after John rescued a red-tailed hawk that had been shot by a hunter. After consulting a conservation agent he took the bird to a veterinarian, this was the beginning to Watkins’ Wildlife Rehab. Besides animals, John was also a surgeon at St. Francis for 50 years, they’ve been running the sanctuary for close to 46 with no signs of stopping. They’re excited to see what else will come their way.
