Civil War Marker Addition to Grant Trail

NEWS

A new historical marker has been placed outside the Cape Girardeau Common Pleas Courthouse on Themis and Spanish St. in commemoration of Ulysses S. Grant’s brief visit to the city. Where the marker stands is the place believed to be the spot where Grant argued with another general who claimed to command the area. Grant, of course, took control of the troops, and led them on to defeat the Confederate army. A ceremony was held last Tuesday in honor of the information plaque, which tells the history of Grant’s visit to Missouri, and the Civil War. Dr. Frank Nickell, a retired history professor representing the Civil War Heritage Foundation spoke at the ceremony, along with foundation executive director Greg Wolk, and Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr., president of the State Historical Society of Missouri. Nickell called Cape Girardeau a place of historical importance. Part of the U.S. Grant Trail, Cape symbolizes a piece of Civil War history, and promotes related tourism for the state.
