The Big Muddy Film Festival Celebrates Biggest Year So Far

NEWS

The Big Muddy Film Festival has a lot to celebrate for its 37th year. Southern Illinois will be welcoming the return of one of its alumni, in fact Edgar Barens helped run the festival when he was a student at SIU cinema and photography school. This year Barens will be proudly showcasing his Oscar-nominated film Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall, which was televised on HBO. Barens filmed the movie by himself in the Iowa State Penitentiary over six months, demonstrating the effects of hospice care for inmates. Several other films will be played as well. 85 films were chosen out of 300 submissions (a record number of entries) produced by filmmakers from 26 countries around the world. The films will be screened in Southern Illinois, and judged by three jurors for awards in animation, documentary, experimental, and narrative categories. This year’s festival is made even more significant with the launch of Digital Muddy, an online festival that will focus on digital media submissions, including website-based projects, webisodes, and digital imaging. The film screenings will take place in various venues around SIU, starting February 24 through March 1. Get more information and a schedule at the website.
