High School Performs Original, Custom Play

NEWS

When you have limited resources you have to think outside the box, that's what Trinity Christian School in Carbondale decided to do when they couldn’t find a play to accommodate their limited set-up. So they called in playwrite Katelyn Beyke-Storm to customize a play for them. Having written high school plays before, she took the opportunity to help out. With a cast of eight boys and two girls Beyke-Storm created a story that would utilize all the actors, and place them in a setting the school could afford, as the drama teacher, Becky Shaffer, would be borrowing their costumes and props from other schools. The play, The Young and the Chivalrous, is about a squire who falls in love with a noble lady who has no interest in him due to their social differences. While attempting to woo her he meets the lady’s handmaid, who becomes a true friend. Thanks to the help of Beyke-Storm and the community this original play will premiere this weekend. "I just think it's a good indication of the camaraderie in our area in the theater world," Shaffer said. "This is not the first time I've had these same groups help me out with plays." The Young and the Chivalrous will be performed February 28 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Varsity Center for the Arts. Tickets are $8, and all are welcome.
