A Slice of Pi

NEWS

Everyone remembers Pi Day, that fun, dessert-filled holiday that actually made everyone excited about math. This year Pi Day will be extra special, as the date, 3/14/15 correlates with the first for digits of Pi, 3.1415, something that won’t happen again for 100 years. Some will even take it a step further, starting the celebration at exactly 9:26:53. Since Pi helps calculate the circumference of a circle it is traditional to bring a round dessert to share. At Cape Girardeau Central High School, math teacher Tracy Lohmeier will be engaging her students in math-related activities, such as reciting digits of Pi, and dressing up as their favorite mathematician. Over at Scott City School District, math teacher Vicki Helderman will be ordering pizza, and have the students use Pi to solve math problems. "Being able to do some of these fun things with math makes it seem a little less intimidating."

If you’re no longer in school you can still celebrate this once-in-a-century celebration with Cup ‘N Cork, who will be serving pies all day. Those that buy a slice will have their name entered in a drawing for a free pie. The drawing will take place at 9:26 p.m.
