Native American Tribe Seeks Recognition

NEWS

Southern Illinois is home to a 200-year-old Native American settlement, and after all these years the tribe is seeking state recognition. The Vineyard Indian Settlement is based in Herod, Illinois, representing about 400 Shawnee Indians along the Ohio River. State Representative Brandon Phelps proposed a bill that would officially acknowledge the settlement, granting them eligibility for federal grants and benefits. In regards to the bill tribe members released this statement: “With state recognition, the Tribe would be able to petition the Federal government for funding. We could build opportunities for economic development, like a Tribal Culture and Crafts Center. Our goal is to create local jobs and training for Indians and non-Indians alike.” While there is still a ways to go before the bill will even reach the senate it’s a good start to preserving the settlement’s traditions.
