Cape Riverfront Market's Opening Day

PRESS RELEASE

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO– The Cape Riverfront Market opens its 2015 season on Saturday, May 2. Despite a slow start to the growing season, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs will be available along with a diverse selection of specialty farm goods, baked items, artisan crafts, and ready-to-eat foods. There will be 7 new seasonal vendors featuring wood crafts, pottery, handmade furniture, earth-friendly body care products, and a wide variety of baked goods in addition to the many returning vendors. Opening day festivities include live music from Southeast Missouri State University's Steel Drum Band (9-11am), dance from Southeast Missouri State University's Theater & Dance Department (9-11am), and homemade pancakes from the market's Demonstrations Committee (8am-12pm) featuring locally made toppings of syrup, honey, and preserves.

The Cape Riverfront Market, located at 35 S. Spanish St. in downtown Cape Girardeau, is a volunteer-driven market which runs every Saturday from 8am-Noon through the end of October. In addition to live music, the market also hosts demonstrations throughout the year such as cooking & nutrition as well as other informative and unique skills by community members. It is also one of the few markets in the area that accepts EBT/Food Stamp benefit cards for qualifying goods to expand healthy options for low income individuals and families.

The market also features the Cape Marketeers Club which is a free program for kids (ages 5-12) focusing on nutrition, science, and growing food. It hosts fun, educational experiments and activities every 2nd and 4th Saturday from May to August where kids earn $2 in tokens to purchase fruits or vegetables at the market. It is funded in part by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services through the HEAL (Healthy Environments and Active Lifestyles) Grant through the guidance of the Healthy Communities Coalition and by the American Chemical Society.

The Cape Riverfront Market is housed under Old Town Cape, recipient of the Great American Main Street Award, a community driven, nonprofit organization that utilizes the Four-Point Main Street Approach™ to preserve, promote, revitalize, and enrich the historic, cultural, and economic landscapes of downtown Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
