Dr. Joni Hand Presents: The Iconography of Job on the Dung Heap

PRESS RELEASE

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO—Thursday, May 7th from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host Dr. Joni Hand during a special lecture to present her extensive research on the iconography of Job on the dung heap in Medieval books of hours.

In the late Middle Ages, Job’s narrative became popular in private devotional manuscripts as a way to meditate on a life dedicated to God in spite of great hardships. Dr. Hand’s lecture will discuss a brief history of the development of Jobian iconography and the story of Job by examining some of the most common scenes of Job’s narrative found in books of hours. She will also discuss the purpose of Jobian iconography in books of hours, with emphasis on its placement within the program of the manuscript.

Dr. Joni Hand, currently a professor at Southeast Missouri State University, received her PhD from the City University of New York Graduate Center in 2010. She also has a MA in art history from Hunter College in New York, an MA in painting from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and a BA in Graphic Design from Kent State University. Hand’s research focuses on illuminated manuscripts from Northern Europe, and female patronage in the late-Medieval period. Her book, Women, Manuscripts, and Identity in Northern Europe, 1350-1550, was published in February of 2013. She has spoken at numerous conferences including the 46th Annual International Congress on Medieval Studies, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI in 2011, Scholars, Explorers, and Priests: How the Renaissance Gave Us the Modern World at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, Queens College, NY in 2011, and the New York City Inter-University Consortium Annual Medieval Studies Colloquium, Fordham University, NY in 2008.

Please call the Arts Council at 573-334-9233 to register for this free presentation.

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is located at 32 North Main Street in Cape Girardeau, MO. Galleries are open Tuesday-Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
