More Tornado Sirens Coming to Cape

NEWS

Tornadoes are a common worry in Missouri, so the city of Cape Girardeau is looking to install more tornado sirens, an issue that came up after recent tornado warnings that left some residents worrying about the inadequate number of sirens. With a radius of one mile there are pockets of the city that don’t hear the sirens when they go off. There are nine tornado sirens already in use (not counting those provided by Southeast Missouri State University) and more will be added as funds become available. Assistant fire chief and emergency management coordinator Mark Hasheider says a tenth siren could be added as early as next year. Priority locations include  Hopper Road, Interstate 55, Route W, and the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course. Hasheider says that there is an ‘adopt a siren’ program for those who wish to help by making donations. Each siren costs about $21,000.  Until then Hasheider is confident that the current number of sirens provide enough coverage, "Right now, the coverage is pretty good," he said. "As funds become available and the city grows, we would look at where we might need to expand the system. But right now everything is covered, and we've even got some overlap in some areas."
