Cape Musician Honored: To Rename Band Shell

NEWS

The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band Shell is being renamed The Dan Cotner Amphitheatre after Municipal Band member and peer-proclaimed ‘River City Music Man’ Dr. Dan Cotner. At the age of 92 Dr. Cotner has been playing trombone with the Municipal Band for over 50 years, and is also a piano and organ player, a skill he donates to his church and local high school musicals.

Dr. Cotner is a World War II veteran, and has served on mission trips providing free dental care for those in need. As the band’s longest-standing member, and a history of public service, band director Ron Nall felt that Dr. Cotner was most deserving of the honor.

The new name is just the beginning, the Amphitheatre will be receiving updates that include more parking, seating, landscaping, and lighting in the coming months.

A ceremony to honor Dr. Cotner - as well as the Municipal Band’s final performance - will be July 29 at 7:15 p.m. at the bandshell in Capaha Park. (Rain location is the Osage Center).
