SIU Holds Viewing Event for 'Blood Moon'

NEWS

A rare and beautiful celestial event will grace the night sky September 27. Thanks to a lunar eclipse the shadow of the earth will fall over the moon, turning it a deep red color. This phenomena is called a ‘Blood Moon.’ Southern Illinois University is celebrating this event by inviting the public into Saluki Stadium for a clear view of this unique moon. Several telescopes will be on the field so that people can observe details, and take photos.  Early activities include science demonstrations with the Society of Physics Students, and movie screenings of “Apollo 13,” and "Chasing Pluto." Concessions will be available, but you will have to bring your own blankets and chairs.

The stadium will open free to the public September 27 at 7:30 p.m. with the Blood Moon expected to appear at 9:11 p.m. through 10:23 p.m.
