United Way to Participate in Giving Tuesday

PRESS RELEASE

Southeast Missouri – United Way of Southeast Missouri has joined Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back, now in its fourth year. Giving Tuesday harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations with social media to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity worldwide.

Occurring this year on December 1, Giving Tuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become synonymous with holiday shopping, the goal of Giving Tuesday is to inspire a national movement around the holidays, encouraging local citizens to impact their community through monetary donations or volunteerism. According to GivingTuesday.org , since its initiation there have been more than 30,000 partners across 68 countries participating in the day, resulting in nearly a 500 percent increase in online charitable donations on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

Elizabeth Shelton, Executive Director of United Way of Southeast Missouri, explains, “As the umbrella organization for so many philanthropies, it only makes sense for United Way to get the ball rolling locally behind this global movement. It may take a few years for it to become as popular and well-known in our region as in other areas, but it’s a wonderful concept we think the generous people in our community will embrace. And the real beauty is that it’s not just about donating money. Our website lists many volunteer opportunities for those who wish to donate time, and our Facebook page offers an opportunity for people to tell their personal giving story.”

Giving Tuesday is promoted and powered by social media. Anyone can join the movement by visiting any of the social media platforms of United Way of Southeast Missouri: Twitter (@UW_SEMO), Instagram (uw_semo) and Facebook.com/unitedwayofsemo where there is a pledge to join #GivingTuesday. Everyone may participate on all platforms using the hashtags #meettheneed #GivingTuesday #UWSemo.

There are two avenues for making financial donations. Mobile pledges can be made by texting “meettheneed” to 41444 and entering the necessary information. Or donors can complete a similar form online at www.unitedwayofsemo.org/donate.

All funds raised on #GivingTuesday will support the 32 funded partners that run 36 programs in the areas of Education, Income and Health in Southeast Missouri. A comprehensive list of the funded partners can be found at www.unitedwayofsemo.org. More information about this movement or how you can LIVE UNITED can be obtained by visiting the website or calling United Way at 573-334-9634.

United Way of Southeast Missouri is able to connect community members with resources thanks to the support of donors and volunteers combined with corporate gifts and sponsorships. The major sponsors for the 2015 campaign are SoutheastHEALTH and Montgomery Bank with additional support from The Bank of Missouri and Drury Southwest.
