Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition Opening Reception this Weekend

The Public Art Committee of the City of Cape Girardeau will launch the city’s third public art outdoor exhibition on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. The show consists of seven substantial pieces to be placed along the Broadway Corridor in Cape Girardeau for one year, culminating in early April 2017.

James Johnson juried the 2016 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, with input from the Public Art Committee; a group that consists of representatives from the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Old Town Cape, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Cape Girardeau, and Chris Wubbena, professor of Sculpture at Southeast Missouri State University. Johnson debuted a piece in the 2015 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. He has participated in over 60 juried and invitational exhibitions and has completed numerous public sculptures currently on exhibit throughout the Midwest. Johnson is a professor at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.

By hosting the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit on Broadway, the Committee hopes to achieve two primary goals: increase the number of arts-related activities within the region and provide an additional revitalization strategy for Old Town Cape.

“We are delighted with how the event continues to grow,” said Murielle Gaither, Executive Director of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. “This year, ‘Quill’ by Dan Perry went on permanent display on Broadway and student work has been incorporated into the corner of Sprigg and Broadway thanks to Broadway Prescription. We see great things happening in the realm of Public Art in this community and are grateful to our partners for their commitment.”

The six artists selected for the exhibition are:

· Jacob Burmood – Springfield, MO

· Ben Pierce – Cape Girardeau, MO

· Nathan Pierce – Cape Girardeau, MO

· Bounnak Thammavong – Swisher, IA

· Mike Sneller – Cedar Rapids, IA

· Will Vannerson – Kansas City, MO

The pieces will be unveiled at a special reception and kick-off event at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15 at the Vasterling Suites Courtyard, located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Broadway and Fountain Street (MAP). The reception will be open to the public after which participants are encouraged to walk Broadway and view the pieces.

Funding for the exhibit was provided by: City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, the National Endowment for the Arts and Old Town Cape.
