PRESS RELEASE

In light of the recent shootings in the United States, Southeast Missouri's football team and local law enforcement personnel are teaming up for a special "Cops and Hawks Bowl" charity event.

Southeast student-athletes and local law enforcement officials will engage in a flag football contest scheduled for Thursday, July 21. Start time is 6 p.m., CT, at Houck Stadium.

Money raised will benefit BackStoppers, which provides needed financial assistance and support to the spouses and dependent children of fallen and injured service members in the line of duty.

"I think this is an awesome response to what is happening in America right now," said Southeast head coach Tom Matukewicz. "I believe that the sports world can be a leader in setting an example of how to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. We are confident this event will have a big impact on our athletic department, student-athletes, campus and community."

The idea to raise money and show support for the University and community's local law enforcement personnel was driven by the Redhawk football team's leadership council, which is entirely player-led.

"Being able to interact with the police department will undoubtedly benefit the Redhawks and this community," said quarterback Dante Vandeven. "We want to set the standard and rise above violence in this society we live in."

The Cops and Hawks Bowl, presented by First State Community Bank, will be played under general flag football rules with officials. An honorary coach will be assigned to each team.

Honorary coaches include Southeast Director of Athletics Brady Barke, Cape Girardeau Chief of Police Wes Blair, Cape Girardeau County Sheriff John Jordan and Jackson Chief of Police James Humphreys.

The Cops and Hawks Bowl is open to the public and donations will be accepted. Donations can be made at the event or online at BackStoppers.org/Donate. Law enforcement officials who wish to participate can sign up atGoSoutheast.com/CopsandHawks.
