LST Memorial 325

Local plans are firming up for the LST Memorial 325’s visit to Cape Girardeau this month.  

The LST is scheduled to arrive at Riverfront Park on Sept. 28.  Everyone is welcome to attend the opening ceremony at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29 featuring speakers, the national anthem sung by Trudy Lee, the Pledge of Allegiance, and music by the Jerry Ford Patriotic Band.  The LST will open for tours at 9 a.m. after the conclusion of the opening ceremony.

The LST will be open for tours Sept. 29 - Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m each day.  Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-17, and children 5 and under are free.

Other local events surrounding the LST’s docking include a living camp set up by the SEMO Chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association at the First Presbyterian Church's lot at the corner of Broadway and Spanish streets.  The camp will consist of tents, vehicles, weapons, and the various gear that would have been used by Armed Services, with a primary focus on the WWII era.  Brian Congiardo, SEMO MVPA member says, "The general public will be able to walk through the Camp and interact with our members while they are in full period uniform. Questions are welcome, and there will be many hands-on opportunities for all generations. Typically, we find families with multiple generations sharing experiences while having the rare opportunity to handle some artifacts from an era that are typically only found in museums or seen on a documentary. Our members are always eager to share the information and history that surrounds the equipment we collect, particularly with the young."

A short drive away, another WWII icon will be on display September 27 - October 2. The B-17 Flying Fortress will be on public exhibition at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport and open for "climb aboard" ground tours each day from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with a suggested $5 donation.
