United Way Awarded Members for Read to Excel

United Way of Southeast Missouri (UWSEMO) is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a two-member grant from the DeltaCorps Regional Authority, a division of AmeriCorps. The grant provides two members for a new program, Read to Excel (R2X), an expansion of United Way’s valuable Read to Succeed program in the Cape Girardeau Public Schools.

Read to Succeed began at Blanchard Elementary in 2011 and now provides volunteer tutoring to new readers in kindergarten and first grade in all Cape elementary schools. DeltaCorps will fund two members to extend the program into grades 2-6. The grants in the form of human resources, rather than financial resources, were awarded to nonprofit organizations that have already distinguished themselves as influential advocates for change in the Delta region.

According to Elizabeth Shelton, Executive Director of United Way of Southeast Missouri, “Much of the reason we were awarded two members is based on the proven success of Read to Succeed, which originally was funded by an AmeriCorps grant that enabled the program to expand to all Cape Girardeau elementary schools in 2012. We now have data demonstrating those students who were in kindergarten and first grade that year, and are now in third and fourth grade, have the highest reading proficiency rates of any of the other cohorts. We are incredibly proud of that and grateful to the United Way leaders and volunteers who had the vision to bring this program to our community. The addition of these members helps us greatly increase our impact without affecting our operating expenses so that we can continue to invest our donor dollars back into our partner agencies and programs.”

Interested applicants can learn more about the position at http://www.unitedwayofsemo.org/Career/Internship-Opportunities/  and apply here: https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=73525&fromSearch=true. All qualified applicants will be considered, but only those registered as AmeriCorps members can be hired.
