Today (10/3), FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The WEA test will occur at 1:18 p.m. (CST), followed by the EAS test at 1:20 p.m. (CST).
The test will “assess the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine whether technological improvements are needed.” This is the fourth EAS nationwide test and the first national WEA test. The WEA test message will be sent to cell phones, most of which will receive a message box with tone and vibration. This is just a test, and your phone number is not shared with anyone.
