A Breath of ‘Fresh Air’ Coming to KRCU

KRCU PUBLIC RADIO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 20, 2014 – On Saturday, March 29, KRCU, the National Public Radio affiliate station at Southeast Missouri State University, will add four new programs to its weekend schedule.

The new programs are NPR’s “Snap Judgment,” NPR’s “Fresh Air Weekend,” NPR’s “Intelligence Squared,” and “America’s Test Kitchen” from the Public Radio Exchange.

“Snap Judgment,” a weekly public radio program distributed by NPR, dares listeners to see a sliver of the world through another’s eyes with raw, intimate and musical narrative. It’s storytelling, with a beat. Host Glynn Washington takes listeners on a narrative journey, dropping them into the heart of each story.

The show highlights compelling people from across the globe with one commonality: they put everything on the line. As Washington explains, “It’s the Robert Frost thing: the roads diverge, and you have to make a choice. You always wonder what your life would have been if you’d gone the other way.”

“Snap Judgment” stretches the medium of radio, layering DJ-driven soundscapes with lyrical storytelling, intimate conversations and live performances. KRCU will air “Snap Judgment” Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m. and Sunday evenings at 6 p.m.

Fans of “This American Life” and “Radiolab” will find much to like about “Snap Judgment,” which makes it a good follow-up to “This American Life” which airs Saturdays at noon. With the new schedule, “Radiolab” will begin airing Saturdays at 2 p.m., and NPR’s “TED Radio Hour” will begin airing Saturdays at 3 p.m.

“Fresh Air” with Terry Gross is NPR’s Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues. “Fresh Air Weekend” will be heard Sundays at 1 p.m. on KRCU. The program offers some of the most intelligent interviews, reviews, and commentary heard on radio. It features interviews with prominent cultural and entertainment figures, as well as distinguished experts on current events. “Fresh Air Weekend” features highlights from the daily program, with an emphasis on arts and culture.

A lot of KRCU listeners have asked for “Fresh Air,” and “Fresh Air Weekend,” which will be a great way to introduce the program to KRCU. It will be followed up by “America’s Test Kitchen” Sundays at 2 p.m., and “Wits” on Sundays at 3 p.m.

The program changes are in part a response to a survey that KRCU radio conducted in February. In it listeners indicated that good storytelling and accurate in-depth information are very important to them. Listeners counted “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered” and “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” as their favorites. Respondents also reacted favorably to such programs as “This American Life,” “The Diane Rehm Show” and “A Prairie Home Companion.”
