CAPE PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER
The Cape Girardeau Public Library offers several enrichment and educational programs. Below is their schedule of events for the month of September.
Adult Services
Library Book Sale - Hirsch Rooms
Friday, September 5
Friends of the Library get a sneak preview from 5-6 p.m., and the book sale will open to the public from 6-8 p.m.

Write Your Own Story - Conference Room
Monday, September 8 10 a.m.
Everyone loves a good story, why not make it yours? Bring what you’re writing to receive an honest opinion and suggestions.
Great Books - Oscar Hirsch Room
Wednesday, September 10 2 p.m.
Great Books will discuss Annie’s Ghosts: A Journey into a Family Secret by Steve Luxenburg.
Chewing the Fat: A Cookbook Club - Penzel Conference Room
Thursday, September 11 6:30 p.m.
Participants will check out a cookbook each month and then share their favorite recipe from the cookbook the following month.
*Computer Class - Microsoft Word - Computer Lab
Saturday, September 13 2-4 p.m.
Learn the basics of using Microsoft Word, a versatile word processing program. Presenter: Robin Smith.

Saturday, September 20 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Join Christine Paige from the City of Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation Department for an hour of Zumba. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

Join Dr. Jim Dufek, Professor of Mass Media at Southeast Missouri State University, and Chuck Martin, Executive Director of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitor's Bureau, to learn about the filming of Gone Girl.

Join local food columnist and communications studies instructor Brooke Clubbs to learn how to make dishes fit for a scrapbook -dishes that help you remember a loved one, a special occasion or a family trip. Brooke will demonstrate how to prepare the dishes and provide a copy of the recipes to those who attend.
*Computer Class - Digital Photography - Computer Lab

Topics include selecting and using cameras, editing, displaying and sharing photographs. Presenter: Ron Doughty

Youth Services
Monthly reading challenges for children and teens. Stop by the Youth Services Desk each month to pick up your reading challenge. Complete & sign the reading challenge, then bring it to the library by the end of the month for a chance to win movie tickets and other prizes.

THEME: Celebrate grandparents. Stories, songs and activities.

Use geometric shapes, lines, and watercolors to create abstract art in the style of Wassily Kandinsky.

YuGiOh Club (Junior High and High School)
Saturday, September 13 1 p.m.
Each member will need a 40-60 card deck with sleeves in order to duel.
*ArtStarts (Grades 1-3)
Wednesday, September 10 4 p.m.
Learn about Dadaist, Hans Arp and his technique, “the collage of happy accidents.” Technique: torn paper collage.

Let’s LEGO (Ages 5-12)
Wednesday, September 17 4 p.m.
Challenge: Monochromatic building. You can build anything. Anything? Yes… but that “anything” has to be monochromatic. That means you need to pick one color of LEGO and use just that one color for your creation!
Building Together (Ages 3-6)
Monday, September 22 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Building blocks and construction toys are perfect for encouraging creative thinking and enhancing problem-solving skills. They also help children develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial skills, social skills and language skills. Drop in, play and build together.
*Creation Station — Color (Ages 4-7)
Saturday, September 27 9-10 a.m.
Each class is based on a technique or element of design - this month use paint and thickening agents to make an impasto painting like Van Gogh. Instructor: Kelly Hughes with Open Window Studio.

*Studio Art Adventures — Tangled Line Drawings
(Grades 4-7)
Saturday, September 27 1-2 p.m.
This month, explore impasto paintings like Van Gogh. Combine paint and thickening agents to create a painting with textural magic. Instructor: Kelly Hughes with Open Window Studio. There is a $3 fee for materials payable to the instructor on the day of the program.
