Vocal Arts Boot Camp Offers Junior High, High School Students Performance Training

SEMO NEWS BUREAU

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., May 20, 2014 — Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will host the second annual Vocal Arts Boot Camp (VABC) June 16-21 at the River Campus.

The Vocal Arts Boot Camp is a rigorous and fun training opportunity for vocal students in grades 7-12.  The camp focuses on developing singing and performing skills for high school choral and solo contests.  The training incorporates classical, Broadway and jazz literature, depending on the background and needs of each student.   Students will have individual voice training with members of Southeast’s voice faculty to develop tone quality, projection and range.  Additional activities include building performance skills in acting, movement, song interpretation, audition techniques, diction, as well as basic music theory and aural skills.  At the request of students from last year’s camp, an extra day has been added to the camp to provide more time for fun and work.

“The camp promises to be a fun and rewarding experience for young singers, and the staff is excited to bring the Vocal Arts Boot Camp back this summer,” said Christopher Goeke, voice faculty member at Southeast and director of the VABC. “It’s a great way to improve your performing abilities, meet new people and see what it might be like to be a music student at Southeast.”

Students can sign up for “residential” status ($475), which includes housing, and all meals and activities.  Or, students can elect “commuter” status ($325), which includes lunch, dinner and all activities.  Optional leisure time activities include a pool party, ice cream social or movie night.  Members of the camp also have the opportunity to attend a performance of Nunsense, which is being presented as a part of the first community Summer Arts Festival.  Campers will conclude the week with a performance of selected solos and group songs in the Robert F. and Gertrude L Shuck Music Recital Hall at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 21.   The performance is free and open to the public and is also a part of the Community Summer Arts Festival.

Interested students should have at least one year of choral or solo vocal training to participate.  Parents and campers can find more information about registration at: https://app.semo.edu/sfs/pymt/reslifecamps/index.asp
