Fireworks in Cape Girardeau

Fireworks can be sold in the City of Cape Girardeau from 8:00am through 10:00pm
during the period of June 27th through July 4th. It is permitted to discharge fireworks
between 10:00am and 10:00pm from June 27th through July 3rd. On July 4th, fireworks may
be discharged from 10:00am to midnight.

In the city, only Class C fireworks are allowed to be sold or discharged. Class C fireworks are
referred to as “common fireworks” and include the everyday fireworks that are normally sold to
individuals. They include the normal size firecrackers, sparklers, fountains, spinners, roman
candles and rockets. NO BOTTLE ROCKETS OR ANY OTHER “AERIAL DEVICE” WHICH
UTILIZE A STRAIGHT AND RIGID STICK ATTACHED TO IT MAY BE SOLD, DISTRIBUTED,
POSSESSED OR DISCHARGED WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS.

It is unlawful for any individual under 17 years of age to purchase or attempt to purchase,
possess or offer false proof of age to attempt to purchase fireworks. It is also unlawful
for anyone under 17 years of age to possess or discharge fireworks unless under the
direct supervision of a parent or guardian.

In order to sell fireworks in the City limits, each retailer must have a City merchant’s license for
each stand, a County merchant’s license as well as a permit from the Missouri Department of
Fire Safety. The City merchant’s license can be obtained at the Customer Service Office
located in City Hall across from the City Manager’s Office. The County merchant’s license can
be obtained at the County Collectors Office located in the Common Pleas Courthouse Annex in
Cape and at the County Administration Building in Jackson, Missouri. To obtain the permit from
the Missouri Department of Fire Safety, you must contact the Missouri Division of Fire Safety,
P.O. Box 844, Jefferson City, MO 65102. Applicants can call toll-free 1-800-877-5688 for the
application.

Please utilize safety precautions when enjoying fireworks. Make sure they are pointed in a safe
direction and away from anyone in the area. Have a safe and fun 4th of July!!
