The Cape Girardeau Public Library offers several enrichment and educational programs. Below is their schedule of events for the month of October.
Adult Services
*Computer Class - How to Blog - Computer Lab
Saturday, November 1 2-4 p.m.
Learn how to create a blog. Presenter: Barbara Clements
From Slaves to Soldiers: Civil War U.S. Colored Troops from Southeast Missouri - Oscar Hirsch Room
Wednesday, November 5 2-3:30 p.m.
Local historian Denise Lincoln will discuss slaves from Cape Girardeau who enlisted to fight in the Civil War.
La Conversacion: A Spanish Language Conversation Club - Schade Study Room
Thursday, November 6 6:30 p.m.
Join Adriana Valadez to learn Spanish vocabulary and practice the language in this club that meets the first Thursday of each month.
Wounded by Struggle, Transformed by Hope - Oscar Hirsch Room
Saturday, November 8 10 a.m.
Join local author, columnist and teacher Ellen Shuck for a motivational talk about ways to deal with and overcome struggle and find new life based on her new inspirational book Wisdom For the Journey.
*Dessert in a Jar Workshop - Oscar Hirsch Room
Saturday, November 8 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Make a beautiful cake mix in a jar to give as a gift or to take home and bake for your family in this workshop. Registration is required; if five or more people are not registered for this event by Nov. 6, it will be canceled.
Write Your Own Story - Penzel Conference Room
Monday, November 10 10 a.m.
Everyone loves a good story, why not make it yours? Bring what you’re writing to receive an honest opinion and suggestions.
Great Books - Oscar Hirsch Room
Wednesday, November 12 2 p.m.
Great Books will discuss To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild.
Chewing the Fat: A Cookbook Club - Penzel Conference Room
Thursday, November 13 6 p.m.
Participants will check out a cookbook each month and then share their favorite recipe from the cookbook the following month.
RockStar Fitness - Oscar Hirsch Room
Saturday, November 15 1:30 p.m.
Join Tamatha Crowson from the City of Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation Department for RockStar Fitness, Cape's newest workout craze. RockStar Fitness is a fast-paced, exciting blend of dance fitness, boxing, cardio and strength and is guaranteed fun!
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

THEME: Favorite Foods Stories, songs and activities. Bring a can of food or non-perishable item to donate to the food pantry.
*Got Art? (Grades 4-6)
Wednesday, November 5 4 p.m.
Featured artist: Rene Magritte. Inspired by the painting, “The False Mirror,” participants will create a drawing of the eye with a landscape in the iris.
YuGiOh Club (Junior High and High School)
Saturday, November 8 1 p.m.
Each member will need a 40-60 card deck with sleeves in order to duel.
*ArtStarts (Grades 1-3)
Wednesday, November 12 4 p.m.
Celebrate the birthday and the art of Georgia O’Keefe. Artists will get out magnifying glasses and look closely at flowers, then paint what they see.
International Games Day @ your Library (Family Program)
Saturday, November 15 9 a.m. - 1p.m.
Drop in and play with some of the games that will be set-up in the youth program room. Over 1,000 libraries are participating in this event. No registration required. Just come in and play!
Let’s LEGO (Ages 5-12)
Wednesday, November 19 4 p.m.
Challenge: Love games? Create a game or build something based on your favorite game. No registration required. Just come and build!
*Creation Station (Ages 4-7)
Saturday, November 22 9-10 a.m.
Each class is based on a theme and an element of art and design. This month, create a mat board mobile that becomes a moving sculpture. Instructor: Kelly Hughes with Open Window Studio.
*Studio Art Adventures (Grades 4-7)
Saturday, November 22 1-2 p.m.
Each class is based on an element of art and design. This month, make a kinetic sculpture inspired by the work of Alexander Calder.
Instructor: Kelly Hughes with Open Window Studio. There is a $3 fee for materials payable to the instructor on the day of the program.
Building Together (Ages 3-6)
Monday, November 24 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
Building blocks and construction toys are perfect for encouraging creative thinking and enhancing problem-solving skills. They also help children develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial skills, social skills and language skills. Drop in, play and build together.
