Incidental Fees Reduced for Southeast Resident Undergrads, Regional Campus Lower Division Courses

SEMO NEWS BUREAU

Board of RegentsCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 21, 2014 – Students at Southeast Missouri State University got a break today when the University’s Board of Regents rolled back total fees assessed to resident undergraduate students this fall by $3.50 per credit hour and on lower division courses at the regional campuses by $4 per credit hour.

The action came after Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, on Sept. 11, announced the release of his earlier 5 percent withholding of appropriation dollars on higher education institutions. Prior to the withholding, the Governor had approved an increase in FY15 operating appropriations for higher education totaling 5 percent under HB2003.

With today’s action, total fees assessed to resident undergraduate students will drop from $234.75 per credit hour to $231.25 per credit hour. Total fees assessed on lower division courses at the regional campuses will fall from $145 to $141 per credit hour.

Kathy Mangels, vice president for finance and administration, said students will receive a credit for the fee reduction on their student account based upon their credit hour enrollment through the fourth-week census date.

Kenneth W. Dobbins, president of Southeast Missouri State University, said he is pleased that Board actions provided a break for student finances.

“We are very pleased the Governor has rescinded the 5 percent withholdings from our appropriations and are also very pleased to pass that along as savings to our students by reducing fees,” he said.

Mangels said the $2.50 increase to general fees for maintenance and repair will continue to be assessed because it is specifically designated to repay bonds and was previously approved by Student Government and reported under SB389 requirements. The Board originally approved these fees in December 2010, and they were scheduled to be fully assessed in fall 2013 to repay Series 2010 bonds.

Total incidental fees assessed to resident undergraduate students for Fall 2014 will now be identical to those charged in Fall 2013.
