Breaking the Surface - Free Community Paddling Event

Paddling enthusiasts will have an opportunity to paddle on Little Grassy Lake during Breaking the Surface, a free community paddling event, Saturday, October 11 at SIU?s Touch of Nature Environmental Center.

Touch of Nature will provide everything you need to get out on the water including canoes, kayaks, personal flotation devices and paddles. Participants are encouraged to bring snacks, water bottles and water shoes or shoes you don?t mind getting wet.

Paddlers may also bring their own boats but must have a Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge sticker or a day pass, which can be purchased onsite for every boat you bring.

Breaking the Surface will include an appearance by the Illinois Department of Natural Resource?s Voyageur canoe capable of seating 20 people. Kayaks built by the kayak building class from the SIU Student Center will also be on display as well as cardboard boats and a canoe which belonged to outdoor recreation pioneer Lloyd B. Sharp.

Check in is at 1 p.m. At 2:30, paddling instructions will be provided for beginners as well as open and guided paddling on Little Grassy Lake. Hot dogs, chips and beverages will be available beginning at 5:30, followed by a paddler?s social and an interpretive walk commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.
