Arts Council of Southeast Missouri to Host Reception for Artist Wanakee Pugh

PRESS RELEASE

Photo of Wanakee PughFriday, November 7, from 5 to 9 p.m., the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will host a reception for artist Wanakee Pugh, who is a resident of the Southeast Missouri Region.

Ms. Pugh’s November exhibit will be on display from November 7 – 29 and will include a solo show displaying a diverse array of artistic media and genres.

The artist was born in New Jersey and raised in Michigan. In 1980 she moved to New York City to pursue a modeling career, which ultimately spanned 20 years. Her client list included such industry giants as Revlon, Clairol and Avon, and she regularly appeared in Vogue, Self, Essence, Ebony and Glamour magazines.

While in New York City, Pugh’s frequent visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art inadvertently segued her into a career as an artist. She began deciphering each painting as a series of lines, shapes, shadows, highlights and colors. Eventually, this led to Pugh painting studies of the Hudson River School masterpieces and quickly transitioned to her painting original works.

Ms. Pugh’s flexibility allows her to paint in several genres. She states, “I enjoy painting old world charm as much as contemporary abstracts. It may be my fashion background influencing me, but to paint the same style every time I pick up a brush feels like putting on the same clothes every time I get dressed.”

The Visual Arts Cooperative will also debut new works in their gallery space at the Arts Council. Window exhibitors for the month of November will be Randy Hays and Sarah Cochrane.

Join other arts patrons and supporters in welcoming Wanakee Pugh, Friday, November 7th. The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is located at 32 North Main Street in Cape Girardeau, MO. Galleries are open Tuesday- Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.
