Gov. Nixon Urges Hunters to Donate Deer Harvest to Food Pantries

KFVS12 NEWS VIDEO/ARTICLE

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon hopes deer hunters do well in the upcoming firearm season so they can do good for families in need with their harvest.

Heartland News caught up with Governor Nixon today as he made a stop in Sikeston. He toured and spoke at the SEMO Food Bank to encourage participation in the share the harvest program.

Share the Harvest encourages deer hunters to donated meat to families in need. Besides the Semo Food bank - dozens of food pantries and meat processors help make the program possible with the help of the Missouri department of conservation.

You can find participating agencies in your county through the Missouri Department of Conservation website: http://mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/deer/share-harvest

The SEMO Food Bank serves 50,000 people in 16 Heartland counties every month, and food bank officials say the need continues to grow.

In 2012, more than 318,000 pounds of venison was donated to needy families through the Share the Harvest Program.

Missouri's firearm deer season starts Saturday, November 15 and runs through November 25.
