With the new restaurant tax in place the Cape Girardeau government is expecting an increase in revenue, and is planning on putting that money to good use. In the past the restaurant tax has funded tourist-related projects, and helped build the new River Campus for the university.
A six-person committee was formed to decide on a project, considering recommendations for an aquatics center, and a high-end hotel. But favor fell unanimously on an indoor sports complex. Usually the Show-Me Center takes the brunt of tournaments and sport projects. They say that another sport complex will help balance the need for space.
While nothing is official, the new complex is estimated to become a 120,000 square-foot facility with room for six basketball courts which would transform to 12 volleyball courts, as well as a turf field for soccer. The committee favored the idea of renovating an existing building rather than creating a new structure.
But first he committee must agree on a design, location, and what the cost will be, estimated for now at $19.8 million. Councilman Mark Lanzotti said, “This could serve as a very big steppingstone for hopefully bigger and better things to come.”
Information on the project and committee can be found on the city blog.
