Scott City takes out two birds with one stone with the construction of a safe room and a performing arts center all in one building. The Scott City school district recently secured funds from FEMA to make this project happen.
The building is 8,989-square-foot and can accommodate 1,275 people, be it for a show, or an emergency. It is expected to withstand an EF5tornado, and comes with a back-up generator. The resourceful design not only gives the chance for school and community theater projects, but peace of mind from the threat of tornadoes that looms over the region.
Superintendent Diann Ulmer said that the facility is open to the community after school hours, and for emergencies a key will be kept with the police department. Completion is expected by June at the latest.
