Saxony Stitchers Make Clothes for Those in Need

NEWS

Though they live in a retirement community, a group known as the Saxony Stitchers are hard at work, sewing dresses and clothes for Operation Christmas Child this holiday season. The spare room at the Saxony Village Retirement Community looks a lot like Santa’s workshop with clothes hanging from a line, more stacked on tables, and five charitable elves sewing away. Betty Jean Brown, Marge Hackney, Sue Donachy, Mary Hitt, and Elizabeth Spencer have worked for the past two months creating 125 dresses for needy girls and women around the world. Buttons, fabric, supplies, even pillowcases were donated by residents and church-goers to support the cause. A grant from the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans helped paid for sewing machines. Several volunteers, as well as Sunday school children have helped as well, making forty extra dresses out of fabric and pillowcases. Each dress takes about two hours to make. The Saxony Stitchers are experienced seamstresses, some having sewn since they were little. With all the supplies they plan to continue sewing into the new year, and hope to receive another grant to make their work more efficient.
