Southeast Resident Performed in Past Super Bowl

NEWS

In 1971, when there was still just one Roman numeral to keep up with, Vicki Litzelfelner Abernathy, still a student at Southeast Missouri State University, had the honor of performing in the Super Bowl V Halftime show as one of the three majorettes in the marching band. “Before Madonna and the Janet Jackson malfunction,” Abernathy said, “there was the Southeast Missouri State College marching band.” Abernathy performed in front of 79,000 fans in the Miami Orange Bowl that year, with more than 45 million more watching at home. The Band executed their signature maneuver, the ‘floating marquee’, in which the 200 members formed the words ‘Super’ and ‘Bowl’. Abernathy reflects back on it fondly, “Katy Perry’s getting her fame now at Super Bowl XLIX, but I got it first.”
