From the Living Room to the Lake: Fish Love Christmas Trees

Ever wonder what happens to some of your Christmas trees once the season ends? Interestingly enough, it’s fish that benefit from the abandoned evergreens. Over at the Crab Orchard’s habitat in Marion, Chris Bickers, an Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Region 5 fisheries biologist, uses the trees to give fish a safe place to live. Each year Bickers puts about 300 trees around the lake, using the branches to provide overhang, where fish can hide from shore-based predators, as well as spawn, and feed. This is also a good process for fishermen, after all, more fish means a bigger catch. They will be collecting trees through the rest of February.
