Lincoln Exhibit Arrives for Birthday

An important piece of Illinois history has come to Mt. Vernon. A president Lincoln exhibit is being hosted at Hughey Funeral Home, just in time for Honest Abe’s birthday. The exhibit includes a replica of the coffin Lincoln was buried in, as well as some memorabilia. This is one of five replicas in existence, a special example of the impact Lincoln’s funeral had on burial ceremonies. While most people were buried in pine boxes, Lincoln had a walnut casket, painted black, and ornate with silver decorations. He was also the first president to be embalmed. He is buried in Springfield, IL. This is an important year as well, as it will be the 150th anniversary of the assassination. The casket will be on display all week, with a special open service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 12.
