Held bi-annually, the event begins with a full day of rehearsal led by former and current choral directors. The event culminates with a performance at 7:30 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall followed by a reception for all participants.

Retired Southeast choral directors, Dr. Doyle Dumas (music faculty from 1957-1988) and Dr. John Egbert (music faculty from 1984-2011) will lead selections they have chosen along with current director, Dr. Peter Durow. The University Choir will perform separately and with the alumni choir. The concert also will feature the Choral Union, the University’s largest choir comprised of students and community members. Professor Emeritus Dr. John Shelton (music faculty from 1962-1997) formed and directed the original Choral Union in 1978. Shelton, along with other former and current accompanists, will accompany some of the pieces for the alumni choir.

The first year the alumni choir assembled was in 2013, brought together by alumna Carolinn Sullivan-Devos.

“We had a wonderful turnout, especially considering it was our first year,” she said. “We have since heard from many more alumni who plan to come this year. It’s just a great time with a fabulous performance that audience members will enjoy just as much as those of us singing.”

The premiere performance included an original work entitled “Never Ever,” written and conducted by Don Sowers, music alumnus and retired music teacher from Missouri and Florida schools.

Southeast Alumni Association President Vicki Boren, said, “Singing Don’s piece was so moving for all of us, not only because he wrote it, but it was just very poignant and beautifully written.”

A $16 registration fee is required upon entrance to the event, and each participant is responsible for obtaining the sheet music that will be performed.
