The Bells Toll for Civil War Anniversary

April 9 marks the end of the American Civil War, and this year many churches, museums, and organizations are commemorating the 150th anniversary with a special bell toll. The most famous will be the ringing of the bell at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park in Virginia, where Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant met to end the war, but for the sounds of local celebration, Mike Jones, the director of the Gen. John A. Logan Museum, will be tolling the bell at the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro to mark this important anniversary. Jones has also asked other organizations around Southern Illinois to participate by ringing any large bells available to them. Listen for the bells between 2:00 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.
