Carbondale Kids Take on Zombie Apocalypse

NEWS

A zombie apocalypse may be unlikely, but it makes for an all-encompassing training exercise in disaster preparedness. The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale recently attended an emergency response camp, and at the end went head-to-head against zombies to put their newly-obtained knowledge to the test in a faux zombie attack, instigated by club volunteers. Over the course of the two week-long camp the Boys and Girls Club learned CPR, how to put out fires, outdoor survival skills, how to handle attacks, first aid, virus protection, and more. All classes were provided by organizations in Carbondale including the Fire Department and the Touch of Nature Environmental Center.  During the ‘zombie apocalypse’ the students moved between Disaster Stations to test their skills. They subdued attackers, and tended to injured victims.

“They are learning some pretty valuable lifelong skills, too,” said Sean McGahan, assistant program director at the club. “They are learning how to think clearly and critically in an emergency, and they’re picking up leadership skills and team-building skills.”
