New Skate Park Receives Funding

A skate park is in the works for Cape Girardeau. This new park will be located at the corner of Hawthorne Road and East Rodney Drive. Project coordinator Chris Hutson has been hard at work raising money for this public park. An avid skater in his youth, Hutson noticed that skaters were forced to use parking lots and roads for their sport, and wants to put in the skate park for everyone to enjoy. He and the Parks and Recreation Department feel it will provide amenities for older children. Plans include concrete-constructed ramps, stairs, rails, a bowl, and a seating area. Great strides were made toward this goal when the SEMO District Fair Board granted use of the land next to Arena Park. The most recent achievement has been a donation of  $25,000 from the Cape Girardeau Noon Optimist Club. Hutson says this donation marks the kickoff to the park’s development. They need $300,000 dollars, and are asking for donations of any size. The city of Cape has considered matching the funds should they reach half that goal.  Those interested are asked to contact the Parks and Recreation Department.
