Firefighter for a Day

NEWS

A firefighter is a common dream job for kids - and adults as well. To actually get a sense of what it’s like to be a firefighter the Cape Girardeau Fire Department is holding a Citizen Fire Academy for the public to receive hands-on experience. The Academy will include a classroom setting to learn about the history, codes, and safety of firefighting. Afterwards students will get the chance to wear and handle firefighter gear while attending three training stations. The first is medical which includes patient care and extraction with the ‘jaws of life’ used to force open vehicles after a crash. The next is a burn demonstration where students will observe a fire controlled in a shipping container. Students will also learn ladder operations which includes a ride in the ladder bucket.

The Citizen Fire Academy takes place November 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public, but there are limited seats. Click here to fill out an application and waiver form.
