United Way Sponsors Kindergarten Jump Start

PRESS RELEASE

The goal of Success By 6®, an initiative of United Way of Southeast Missouri, is to ensure that all children are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed by the time they reach kindergarten. In the past fourteen years, Success By 6® has worked to educate parents about their key role as their child’s first teacher, raise the level of quality in our community’s childcare centers, and inform community leaders about the importance of the early years.

According to national data, the majority of children who do not attend Pre-K are already a year behind their peers when they begin kindergarten and are not likely to catch up. Local kindergarten entry assessments indicate approximately 34 percent of Cape Girardeau County kindergarteners do not exhibit the skills necessary to begin kindergarten. In keeping with its mission to enhance education, income and health for all citizens, United Way of Southeast Missouri provides funding to Success By 6® for Kindergarten Jumpstart to help these children build skills and confidence before they reach the kindergarten classroom.

Each session consists of 4 one-hour classes offered at no cost to participants. Two sessions will be offered to 24 parent/child pairs. By limiting each class size to 12 parent/child pairs, the instructor will be able to provide each family with individualized instruction. Classes will be led by a kindergarten teacher along with skilled early childhood educators and will focus on providing parents with the ability to teach their children critical kindergarten preparation skills in the weeks leading up to the first day of school.

Cape Girardeau Public Library has agreed to donate space for the classes to meet at no cost. Staff from the Youth Services Department will participate in the classes and provide information about the children’s area of the library and age-appropriate books for parents to read to their child.

All participating families will receive a book each week, which is related to the topic of discussion each week. Attendees who complete all four weeks will be rewarded with a backpack and kindergarten supplies.

Session One will be held April 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2016. Session Two will be held May 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2016. All classes are at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Families with children entering kindergarten fall 2016 must call Cape Girardeau Public Library, 573-334-5379, ext. 122 to register.
