Messy Morning Hosts Free Activities for Kids

PRESS RELEASE

The 11th annual Messy Morning is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Show Me Center. This popular event is designed for families, and features over thirty different activities to support the development of young children. Attendees are asked to bring canned food items to contribute to the Southeast Missouri Food Bank in lieu of admission.

This year’s event has a science theme, with an emphasis on learning about science through play. Although most of the activities are designed for children under the age of eight years, there will also be a designated area for infants and toddlers. Some of the activities planned include face painting, small animals to see and pet, hand/foot print painting, music together classes, hairspray painting, rainbow slime, bubble art, whip cream find, puppet making, playing in dirt, and dancing.

Highlights of the event include the Steel Drum Band from Southeast Missouri State University, which will perform at 11 a.m. and conclude the event at 1 p.m. There will also be a “Mud Run,” sponsored by SoutheastHEALTH. Before Messy Morning became so popular it had to move into the Show-Me Center, the Mud Run took place in a soaked field outside of the Osage Center. While the name has changed, now children get to slide through mounds of shaving cream beginning at 12:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to wear shoes that are easy to slip on/off and old clothes and to bring a change of clothing.

Messy Morning is hosted through a collaboration of organizations that promote the importance of play activities in the overall development of youth. These organizations include Community Caring Council, Success by Six, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau Public Library, and Tender Hearts Child Therapy Center.

Financial sponsors of the event include Community Caring Council, SoutheastHEALTH, Southeast Missouri State University, The Southeast Steel Drum Band, Tender Hearts Child Therapy Center, Cape Girardeau Public Library, Isle Casino Cape Girardeau, Kohl’s, Walmart, and GRACES Women’s Council, an affinity group of United Way of Southeast Missouri.
