Local Roller Derby Teams Seek to Recruit Children and Adults

PRESS RELEASE

SEMO Junior Roller Derby (Thunderbirds) and Cape Girardeau Roller Derby (CGRD) are recruiting skaters, referees, and non-skating officials at the AC Brase Arena building in Cape Girardeau later this month. The Thunderbirds' recruitment event will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27. CGRD's recruitment will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28. Both events are free with no obligation to join. No skating experience is required to join either league.

SEMO Junior Roller Derby Thunderbirds is a non-profit flat track derby program open to all youth ages six to 17. The team encourages and enriches children and teenagers in developing character, confidence, leadership, and social skills. Interested families are encouraged to attend the upcoming recruitment night to learn how to become involved.

Cape Girardeau Roller Derby is a flat track roller derby league for men and women ages 18 and up. The league develops and promotes sportsmanship, athleticism, and charitable service to the Cape Girardeau area and aims for the empowerment of its members through challenges on and off the track. CGRD offers a 90 day "Fresh Meat" training period during which new members learn basic skating techniques before joining veteran skaters on the track.  Adults interested in skating should bring a "boil-and-bite" mouth guard. Limited "loaner" gear is available but those who already own skates are encouraged to bring them.
