Mt. Vernon Remodeling for Recreation Center

Mount Vernon has received a large grant that will allow them to renovate the old National Guard Armory, and turn it into a recreation building. The armory has stood vacant for a couple of years now, except for the farmers market that took place in the parking lot during the summer months.

The new recreation building is planned to host athletic events, car shows, farmer markets, and conventions, as well as provide a renting option for private events. Officials hope the opportunity for these events will boost tourism.

The grant is valued at $1.5 million, and will go toward removing the asbestos, and giving the building a complete face-lift. Construction will take about 18 months.
