World Traveler Keeps to Her Southern Roots

NEWS

While Mary Catherine Frazier has deep roots in the Bootheel of Missouri the rest of her is busy traveling the world. With her husband Richard and three children, Frazier has biked around Europe, worked for the Peace Corps in Africa, earned her master’s degree in Spain, and co-authored English-learning books for students in Singapore. She made a pit stop back in Missouri to earn her doctorate, and is now living in New Delhi teaching at the American Embassy School. It was there that Frazier was asked to teach English to student Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the successor to the Dalai Lama. Specifically Dorje was deemed the 17th reincarnation of the Karmapa, and has been preparing for this role since he was 7 years old.  Frazier says that he speaks about four languages already, and is a quick learner. She calls the experience humbling and extraordinary, a compliment from someone with such a rich life. Despite being well-traveled Frazier still refers to her southern roots for guidance, as per her family tradition she made sure to have the Karmapa over for dinner, and make him feel like family.
