Family Friendly Memorial Day Things to Do

By Emily Sladek

Are you stumped for ideas for this Memorial Day weekend? Whether you want to spend the weekend toe to toe with nature, or you want to gather the family for a beginning of summer adventure, there is plenty that you can do this weekend. Be sure to thank a veteran sometime this weekend while you enjoy the unofficial kick off to summer. As Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those lost, it is also a thank you to those who served. Now, here is a list of Eight Things to Do for Memorial Day Weekend.

1. Take a hike! With the weather warm, the trees and flowers in bloom, and nature's critters scampering about, a hike is a fun way to spend time in the great outdoors. There are many places in the Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois region to hike including State Parks, wildlife refuges, conservation areas, and more.

2. Water parks! There are a few water parks in the area having their opening days for the season this weekend! Bluff Falls in Poplar Bluff, Cape Splash in Cape, and Farmington Water Park in Farmington will all be opening Saturday, May 25 for the 2013 season.

3. Wineries! Several wineries across the area have live music on the weekends. Enjoy a relaxing setting with great food and delicious wine. Visit out Wineries Calendar for a run-down of live entertainment at the wineries.

4. Off-Road Parks! Who says grown-ups can't play in the mud? Outlaw Off-Road Park just west of Jackson, Brick's Off-Road Park in Poplar Bluff, and LEERJAK Off-Road Park in Patterson are all opening up for the weekend. These venues are all family friendly, but may require release waivers upon entering. Use your discretion when attending.

5. Fort D Historic Site in Cape is holding reenactments throughout the weekend, as well as offering war history from our own backyards.

6. Public swimming! Public swimming pools are opening up all across the area, as well as rivers, lakes, and creeks. Many communities offer public pools, and you can visit recreational swimming areas such as Wappapello Lake, Crab Orchard Lake, Lake Boutin, and Castor River among others.

7. Camping! More than just hiking through nature's landscapes is staying the night in them. Pop up a tent or roll out the camper and enjoy a night or two at a state park or campground of your choice. Be sure to call ahead before you go as many places will fill up fast!

8. Municipal band concerts! Perhaps a star spangled tribute through music is the ticket to celebrating Memorial Day. Catch concerts in varying locations in the region paying tribute to those who served.
