Laugh it Up: Animal Shelter to Host ‘Raise the Woof’ Comedy Show

Stock image: creative commonsThe Humane Society of Southeast Missouri has big plans underway to build a new shelter for their furry tenants. This weekend they will be hosting ‘Raise The Woof,' a dinner and comedy show to help raise proceeds for the new building.

Donations have always helped the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri stay afloat, providing food and care for the animals that come to their shelter. Now their goal of building a new shelter is coming to fruition thanks to the kindness of their supporters. With the Raise the Woof event they will not only provide patrons with first-class entertainment, but continue to raise money for the cause. Despite the name, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri is an independent shelter, they do not receive government or Humane Society funding, but rely on volunteers and community donations.

Staff member Holly Godwin says that they want to make Raise the Woof  a staple event every year, “It’s something neat and different that you don’t see for fundraisers. There’s not much going on this time of year, so we’re excited to offer something a little different.”

Raise the Woof is an organization that works with animal shelters, providing comedians for fundraising campaigns. Dinner will also be served at the event. Patrons can enjoy good food and have a laugh, all for a great cause.

Holly says that plans for the new building are still in the early stages. An anonymous donor who offered to match donations up to $50,000 helped to jump-start this campaign. This goal was met thanks to a very supportive community.

Holly says that,“We just want the best possible facility so that we can reach the goal of becoming a low-kill shelter.”

With more space in the shelter, more animals can be housed for longer periods of time. Holly says the new shelter will also provide a much better environment for the animals and will be designed to reduce stress.

While they wait for the new shelter, the Humane Society is receiving a new intensive care unit built by students in Southeast Missouri State University’s Industrial Technology program. Holly says the ICU should be complete before the end of the spring semester.

Raise The Woof will be performed at Lawless Harley Davidson in Scott City (2100 E. Outer Road), February 27. Doors open at 5:00 p.m, dinner is served at 6:00 p.m., and the show starts at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Humane Society, Mississippi Mutts, or Lawless Harley Davidson. Cost is $35 which includes dinner and the comedy show. Seating is limited, and the shelter hopes for a full house. Holly encourages those who want to attend to purchase their tickets this week.
