VintageNOW 8 Brings Safe House for Women A Step Closer to New Shelter

The Safe House for Women, Cape Girardeau’s service agency for survivors of domestic violence, recently announced a new fundraising campaign to construct a larger, more accessible crisis shelter for women and children.  The Safe Tomorrows Shelter Campaign will provide funds to build a 40-bed facility with features such as a classroom, library, and children’s play area.

“Our current facility has served us well for over 25 years,” says Safe House Executive Director Jessica Hill, “but we have found that we are full so much of the time that we are turning away as many people as we are able to house.  Even when the best option would be shelter, we have to make do with hotel placements or transportation to another safe place.  These are short-term fixes that don’t enable us to offer long-term support to those fleeing a violent situation.”

Hill reports that the goal for the Safe Tomorrows Shelter Campaign is $2.2 million, and the agency has already reached the $1 million mark.  Proceeds from VintageNOW, the fashion show fundraiser that has benefited the Safe House for the past eight years, will also go toward the campaign goal.

“We’re so thrilled with the community support we have received for our shelter project, and especially from everyone who sponsored and attended VintageNOW 8,” said Hill.  Net proceeds from this year’s event, held October 21st at the Osage Center, topped $88,000.  Over 1200 people attended the show, which featured a 1980s theme.

“We would not be in the position to embark upon this campaign without the partnership of everyone who works so hard on VintageNOW, especially Deb Maevers, the founder and director of the show, and the VintageNOW planning committee.”

Campaign donations can be made online at http://www.semosafehouse.org/Safe-Tomorrows-Shelter-Campaign/ or by mail to Safe House for Women, P.O. Box 1167, Cape Girardeau, MO  63702.  All donations are tax deductible, and cash gifts over $100 are eligible for a domestic violence tax credit.
