In Memory of Marcellus Jones

In Memory of Marcellus Jones, a local bartender fondly referred to as Cape’s Favorite Mixologist, who passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the age of 50.

Although Marcellus was a great “Mixologist” he was known and valued more for the smiles and hugs he served. We would like to share some comments shared, on our social media, about the amazing man he was and how he impacted the lives of many people over the years.

  Mary T

Cape Girardeau’s favorite bartender. This guy never met a stranger; to know him was to love him because he had a gift of making us feel loved and special. Plus he gave the best hugs ever....R.I.P my friend; your job on earth is done.

He knew everyone by name, had a contagious smile, was ALWAYS happy and always had to hug ! He was truly one of the most amazing ppl I have ever met! The world was a better place because of him !

, he was one of those few good men. I came into Buckners Ragsdales on one of the toughest nights of my life and he greeted me with a hug and a drink and checked in with me every few minutes for hours even on a busy night telling jokes, making me smile and sharing words of wisdom. I barely knew him but he treated me like family. A real class act.

Marcellus was the absolute best! His smile could light up a room....My youngest daughter loved seeing him and referred to Marcellus as “Brown”.

Cape Girardeau has lost an icon and a truly amazing guy. Rest In Peace, sir. My thoughts and prayers go out to all (the many) that knew him.

Shelby S

he knew everyone’s name. he knew little things about you. he was so knowledgeable about his craft and was truly passionate about it. he never stopped smiling, or hugging. truly a genuine, radiant human being.

Marcellus had a gift for making you feel like the most special person in the room. His laughter, hugs and huge smile will be missed in our community - such sad news.

I worked with this man years ago at Applebee's... He was the first one to make me feel welcome with that great big smile.... He is one I'll never forget

Stephanie T

An authentic, positive guy who made you smile! Rest easy, Marcellus, we raise our glass in your honor.

It’s true a lot of people in today’s society are to divide down racial lines. This man I met over 20 years ago never once did I ever hear him make a negative comment about the color of someone skin, the way they dressed or talked, he simply loved people. A highway was named after the great John Oliver also Roger Fields, I was very acquainted with both men and they were good people but the lives this man touch over 25 years is unsurpassed. The City of Cape less take one night and dedicate it to our friends

One the coolest, funniest, down to earth dudes u will ever meet... gone but not forgotten...

He never met a stranger and once you met him you fell instantly in love. Cellus I will miss you but I'm so very thankful I can proudly say you were and forever will be my friend. Say hi to my son when you get to heaven.

Great fella. Even after moving away for some time and bouncing in and out of town this gem of a guy always stopped to say hello or even just shake my hand and ask how I was. With the heaviest of hearts you will be missed. Your legacy will live on in those you touched or even just made smile. Rest in Peace, my friend!

Such a super Genuine and real person. Immediately put a smile on everyone's face when he walked in a room. Doesn't even seem real. Words can't express the huge loss this is for not only friends and family but everyone that ever was blessed to have the chance to meet him. RIP friend

This is such a great loss for so many people! There is nothing I can say about this guy that everyone doesnt already know. He left his own legacy and the name he built for himself SAYS it all!! Cellous was loved and adored by soooo many. To know him was to love him.

Kind of hit double home for me, bc just a few short days ago he was talking to me about my Chelsea and how she was just like her momma. He reminded me to keep my head up and stay strong and now its so ironic he is gone to now. My heart is so deeply sadden. We all loved him but I will especially be praying for his very close Friends and Family!!! Heaven just got a little more sweeter.

I still can't believe it. Marcellus was one of a kind, a fixture in Cape and a friend to soooo many. RIP my friend, we are all going to miss the joy you brought to everything.

This broke my heart when I heard. Marcellus was one of my favorite parts about karaoke at LoDo/Dempsey’s. I’ll miss him ending the night with uptown funk and dancing the night away as he made all of our drinks with love and laughter.

Eric D

I had the honor of becoming one of Marcellus Jones many friends through Jay E. Back in the early 90's we were the Rugby band and Marcellus always cheered us on and helped us load in and load out our gear. He was always a positive fixture of Cape. I will miss him.

Eric F

Cellus hired me at my college job which led to one of the most fun periods of my life. He always brought a smile around that place.

Erica A

I have not seen or talked to him since I quit drinking in 2013 but I will never forget our last talk. He was always interested in Tyler (played soccer with Neko) and wanted to hear all about his soccer plans each time I saw him. He always found a way to start a conversation with you if he knew you and this was just what we always talked about. Downtown has lost a good man. I am thinking of his family and their loss.

Statement from Marcellus’s family:

Hey everyone - First, we’d like to thank you all for the incredible showing of love and support shown while we work through the particulars of planning Pop's funeral arrangements. Now that we’ve locked down the specifics, we wanted to share them with everyone here for quick and efficient communication.

As we know many have been worried and wondering, the official cause of death was due to an undiagnosed heart condition, resulting in his untimely passing this past weekend.

Services will be hosted by Ford & Sons Funeral Home this Friday June 15 beginning with a visitation period from 9a - 11a at The Osage Centre on North Kingshighway. A short service will immediately follow from 11a - 12:30pm, after which we will then travel to Cape Memorial Park for the official burial. We invite you to join us back at the Osage Center from 2pm - 5pm for a Celebration of Life Reception.

We would love for everyone to join us in the celebration of Pop’s life and his invaluable contribution to the people he called friends and family here in Cape.

With Love,

Dominique, Ryan, Selina and Marque
