River Campus Honored with City’s Beautification Award

The River Campus at Southeast Missouri State University has been honored with the City of Cape Girardeau’s “Keep Cape Beautiful, Property of the Month” award for October.

The award was presented Monday, Oct. 15, at the Cape Girardeau City Council meeting.

The “Keep Cape Beautiful, Property of the Month” award is an affiliate of the “Keep America Beautiful” program, according to Brock Davis, City Parks Division manager. The “Keep Cape Beautiful, Property of the Month” award is presented March-November by the City of Cape Girardeau Beautification Committee.

Angela Meyer, director of Facilities Management, and Andy Tinney, Facilities Management grounds crew supervisor, accepted the award on behalf of the University’s Facilities Management grounds crew. Southeast grounds crew members are Mike Layton, Scott Peel, Kristin Ham, Sam Tiehes, Shelby Marie, Shelby Koch, Gene Pyle, Daniel Koch, Tim Clifton, Tom Bowen, Daniel Kooyer, Trevor Ruble and Dennis Koeberl.

“We are humbled and pleased to receive this award,” Tinney said. “This group really came together as a crew. They have done a fantastic job. We truly appreciate all their hard work.”

The River Campus emcompasses 15 acres and is home to the Missouri state champion beech tree, an interlude fountain at its entrance and the Donald L. Dickerson River Campus Commons, a serene courtyard connecting the original seminary building and convocation center with a breathtaking view of the Mississippi River and the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge. Grounds crew members are regularly visible diligently planting and caring for flowers, mowing grass, weed eating and tending to trees and plants.

“Despite the fact we were short-staffed, I am proud they have stepped up and maintained our campus well for our students, faculty and staff,” Meyer said. “They take pride in what they do.”

Southeast also received the “Keep Cape Beautiful, Property of the Month” award for September 2015 for both the main campus and River Campus. The award recognizes properties exemplifying cleanliness, attractiveness and aesthetic appeal. The Cape Girardeau’s Beautiful Property of the Month award has been given since 2012.
