Southeast Students Presenting Fun Science Demonstrations at BeTween Initiative

Faculty and students from the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Southeast Missouri State University are performing physical science demonstrations at the BeTween Initiative March 2 at the Osage Center in Cape Girardeau.

The BeTween Initiative will showcase activities, highlight services and provide resources available for “tween” girls ages 9-12 in the Cape Girardeau area. The event is scheduled from noon-4 p.m. and is free with registration.

The Department of Chemistry and Physics’ professional student organizations and students currently enrolled in “Professional Experiences in Chemistry” will host a table with fun hands-on science activities, including slime-making, color changes, columns of foam, bubbles that don’t pop, shattering flowers and imploding steel canisters. The students’ demonstrations are also part of the BeTween’s grand finale at 3:30 p.m.

Southeast students have been preparing their demonstrations for several weeks and are looking forward to showcasing fun and informative science experiments for the next generation, said Dr. Rachel Morgan Theall, associate professor of chemistry.

“Chemistry demonstrations entertain and educate hundreds of thousands of people in the United States annually,” she said. “Our students have designed demonstrations that will be visually exciting and educational.”

Additionally, the students will host a dress rehearsal at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 in Academic Hall Auditorium. The rehearsal is open and free to the Southeast community and public.
