Walmart Neighborhood Store Impacts Local Business Before Opening!

For most people in Cape Girardeau the fact Walmart is bringing their Neighborhood Market concept to the Plaza Galleria area on Independence Street is not news. What may be news is the tenants in the strip on the west side of the Galleria parking lot have been evicted and must move their businesses by the end of May.

For Fenny's Mexican Grocery Store and Trish's Place (formerly Brothers II Lounge) it means the end of many years in their current location and a drive to find a new one in order to stay in business. The livelihood of both the owners and employees of these businesses is being affected in a major way and could be permanent, if a suitable location is not found.

The Cape Farmer's Market, formerly held in the Galleria parking lot, has already relocated to the West Park Mall parking lot and still held on Thursdays during the growing season.

One of the biggest challenges for any business owner is finding an affordable location. One benefit to an older location, especially one you have been in for over a decade, is the  rent cost is most often lower than a newer building. While there are a number of commercial locations available, many have much higher lease payments than many small businesses can afford.

Bob Hardy, owner of Trish's Place, though looking fervently to find a new location, has yet to do so. While struggling with the challenge he faces Hardy is taking it on with a celebratory attitude. His hope is to close down the current location with a party for all the friends and family who have been part of the location's history. A "Relocation Party" is planned for the last Friday and Saturday of May and Hardy invites all patrons, old or new, to stop by and help close out an era. There will be various Happy Hour drink specials available all day, both days.

If you happen to know of a good location for either or both of these businsesses to relocate to please reach out to let them know by contacting them at their business.
